Dr Otazo (Hofmeister) has taken an active role in non-profit, ngo, organizations globally and locally. She has been focusing on empowering women through leadership work with Vital Voices and a project to create a simple, open-source template to start a business. Women exemplify a majority of the traits associated with effective leadership and entrepreneurship yet all too frequently do not know how to put their skills to work. Since women and people of color are a huge source of the new entrants into small business development worldwide, Karen is working Neighborhood Centers in Houston to create an online publication in Spanish which can then be used for Latino-American women. Her hope is that if the approach proves useful that the publication can be translated into other languages with appendices for the specifics in each locale.
