Ask Dr. Karen - August 20, 2009

Dear Dr. Karen,

I recently came across an article in the WSJ about how blogging helped many of these unemployed individuals with their job search. I am considering starting a blog. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions when it comes to blogging? I know it is like an online diary so it is important to be comfortable with that before starting. I am excited at the prospect of starting this adventure.

------------------

Anyone interested in you or your skills or your skills will Google you. You want your network and all the people you know to connect to your blog. There is not sense blogging unless you tell people you’re blogging. Let everyone you know about what you’re doing. Find a project or idea you can blog about. Try looking for “business directory blogging websites” that might be of interest to those checking business directories. If you’re not internet savvy, find someone to help you.

A Blog lets you talk about your skills and experiences in an informal way. 1. Talk about a project you’re working on. 2. Get on Twitter and get others to follow what you’re doing. 3. There are many online Social Networking sites like LinkedIn, Twitter for short comments, Blogger.com (create your own blog and design your own page), get your friends and family to link their web pages to yours. 4. Do you volunteer? Write about the importance and what you do.

Stay positive and upbeat in all that you write. Good luck!
